My husband and I received the 8x10 version of this rug as a gift and it was ordered off of Amazon. I feel like there's a serious need for prospective buyers to know what they're getting themselves into when adopting this rug.Seriously, adopting. Like a pet. Except you don't have to feed it. Regardless of that, it's still high-maintenance.The box arrived with the rug folded in on top of itself. The box was squished and there was no plastic around the rug. Were it left in the rain, the rug would've been in worse shape. I opened the box and was immediately hit by the overwhelming smell of sheep. It smelled like it'd just been shorn off that week. Which is sort of to be expected with wool, but it was gross. No bugs, like one reviewer said but the wool looked matted and dirty, so I reviewed the washing instructions that came on the rug. They said it could be cleaned with a mild detergent and had to be air dried, then fluffed with a comb. I emailed the manufacturer to check what constituted "mild detergent" and to this day, two weeks later, I've received no response. Not a lot of help there. I got tired of waiting, so I took the beast, which we affectionately refer to as "Sheppy" upstairs, threw him in the tub, lathered him up with my organic lavender shampoo, and gave him a lukewarm bath. Let me tell you, hefting that sucker around in the tub was back-breaking. I gave him several rinses, pulled tons of spare wool off of my hands, and left him in the tub to drain. after 12 hours, my husband and I hauled him to the garage and hung him up to dry. The smell... oh, the smell. It was like my infant's poopy diaper. Not pleasant. Like the smell of wet dog and when you get your hair permed. It was gross. We vowed to only wash it once a year, in the summertime, where it can have the best chance of drying.3 VERY LONG and stinky days later, the rug was finally dry. I dragged Sheppy into our kitchen, flung him over our dining room table, and proceeded to comb out all of his little fur bits to fluff him up. About an hour and one gigantic tumbleweed of wool later, Sheppy looked lovely. He smelled normal and was soft and fluffy. Sheppy's pretty thin, so we laid out a no-slip rug mat ($10) and an extra thick felt pad ($70) which were both purchased on Amazon and laid him on our hardwood floor. He was glorious and so soft on our feet.We love to lay on this rug, but we quickly noticed that this thing totally sheds. The wool is not actually knotted into place, it's just woven into a rug pad and left hanging there. So you can't vacuum it, you have to be careful which way you comb it, and if you have a pet or a kid who is prone to digging, it'll totally shed all over your house. Woolen tumbleweeds were EVERYWHERE even after the first day. My crawling baby was grabbing onto handfuls of the stuff and pull it out to eat. It was disgusting. After about 3 days of constant vigilance, we finally moved Sheppy upstairs to our master bedroom where he could live in peace and quiet. The living room proved too much for him and we will be purchasing a cotton/wool blend knotted rug to go in our living room instead. All in all, this rug is beautiful. It's comfortable, soft, and very enjoyable. But between the tumbleweeds, the loose fibers, the pain-in-the-butt upkeep, and the inability to vacuum it, I don't recommend it unless you have no kids/pets/foot traffic and can admire it from a distance. We won't be sending Sheppy back, but I also don't recommend him to most homes.

**You will HAVE to get a no-slip pad for this rug. **PRO: We purchased the 8x10 version for our second living room. It is gorgeous, and every single person who has walked through our front door "oohs and ahhs" over it. It gives the coziest, warm and inviting feel to our home. If you have a lifestyle that can overcome the CONS listed below, I wholeheartedly recommend it!CONS: this is not a rug to be used in a room with a lot of activity, kids, potential for dirt, etc. we haven't had shedding issues, but any little piece if dirt, straw, lint or debris will get stuck in the hair and it is impossible to remove easily. I have had to search the Internet already to try to find an easier way to pull debris without pulling the fibers completely out after our Christmas tree needles became practically imbedded in it.
